Just like at home, there are many ways you can also help your school reduce its river footprint.

Again, it's all about reducing how much water your school uses and ensuring it is not polluting our waterways.  Water quantity and quality.

At right we have links to some check-lists your class or school could use to understand how large your river footprint is - is it mouse sized, elephant-sized or somewhere in between ?

These checklists will tell your school  how to use less water.....remembering that every drop you save takes pressure off the rivers, and helps our wildlife.  It also makes the rivers healthier places for us all to enjoy.

The check-lists will also show you and your classmates how to reduce your impact on the quality of the water leaving your school.

What you put down your drain may be causing river pain which ultimately impacts on us all !

Saving water at school

Try our checklist here (or download it as pdf file) to see if your school can save water*...this will save the school money and be good for for your nearby rivers.

After you've done the water audit, set your school  some targets to reduce water use by a certain amount or percentage per month.    It all helps !

Is your school polluting

our waterways ?

We all have some impact on the quality of water that passes through our homes, schools and where we work, some more than others. There are lots of ways each school can reduce this river footprint.

Cleaner water means healthier rivers, more swimming, fishing...enjoyment.

We've also got a quick and easy checklist here, to see how good your school is at keeping our waterways clean, and maybe some ways it can do better*.

Remember, our rivers are not as far away as you think.

* Important point:  It is essential that you discuss doing these audits at your school with your teacher first.  Some aspects of the check-lists require teacher supervision and advice.

And, after you've done the audits, maybe your school would like to be formally recognised as a RiverSmart School - contact us for further details about the schools accreditation program.  One thing you will have to do is use your audits to help you prepare a School RiverSmart Policy and have it formally adopted by the school Board (or similar body).  Further details are provided here.
